• Welcome

I've been designing and building websites since around the year 2000 now when I began by building basic HTML sites in Dreamweaver, but now hand code larger sites using a variety of web technologies, content management systems, languages and techniques. I have an increasing portfolio of sites built using the Joomla content management system, but I have also recently started working with Wordpress and other open source systems. Zend is a popular PHP framework that I am expanding my use of as I become familiar with its wealth of functionality and potential.

I'm a web developer/designer and graphic designer based in Driffield, East Yorkshire. I'm part of the development team at C Spencer Ltd in Barrow-on-Humber and also work on my own freelance projects. As part of my own portfolio I host around 30 small to medium websites for a variety of clients. These include guesthouses and holiday cottages, vehicle hire, musicians, DJs and DJ management, builders, recruitment consultants, manufacturing companies and athletics clubs. I work in XHTML/CSS/PHP, MySQL, Zend Framework, Joomla, Wordpress and I use open source software such as GIMP, LibreOffice and Komodo Edit on both Linux/Ubuntu and Windows operating systems.

  • Content Management

I'm working more and more with Wordpress and Joomla on a variety of projects. As well as showcasing the sites on my portfolio, I'll also be making recommendations on different extensions, optimum set-ups and good sources of information, templates and other bits and pieces to help others improve the standard of their own sites. I hope to be using other content management systems such as Drupal and ExpressionEngine over the coming months and maybe having a stab at building my own. I'll add articles, reviews, opinions and tips to this site as and when I can.

Open Source Web TechnologiesAs well as a portfolio of work, I want to start building up a library of resources and information related to web design, development and graphic design. The Internet is constantly changing and re-inventing itself. As the generators of content and resource, we have to do the same, which isn’t always easy – we all get set in our ways and enjoy the comfort of the we’re we’re used to of doing things.

The Open Source community is large and vibrant and, best of all, free to use. By helping to promote open source products and showing people how they can get good results without necessarily shelling out hundreds or even thousands of pounds on expense software suites, I hope to do my bit from here.

I’ll start off by detailing my own set-up and then going into more detail about how I use it, as well as comparing open source applications with their commercial counterparts.
